My daughter has a very good eye and I am immensely proud of it. I’d buy her her own camera soon as she is old enough to know exactly what it’s for, and is responsible for what she will get out of it. She loves looking at the photos I take and I like asking her opinion on which photos are good or not.

She also does not like having her photos taken. More often than not, she would say No when I ask if I can take her photo.

Some days I’d ask her to take photos and she’d flat out say no.

Whereas some days she wouldn’t stop taking photos. She loves taking photos of me.

So one September morning, while hanging out in our bedroom in El Nido, Lia decided it was portraits time.

And I guess that day, Lia was really in the mood for taking photos because that evening, she was still at it. She found it extremely amusing that I had Angry Birds stickers on my face, which she put on herself.

Lia and I definitely have lots of fun together. Even if we are just hanging out inside our bedroom. 😉

This is What We do on Lazy Sundays

We were bound for the beach again even though I was not in the mood for some swimming. My mood had me dress myself in a tight red top that my friend Summer had given me for my birthday many summers ago – it says Wiitarded; a black skinny jeans, the only pair of pants I brought to the island; and my favorite brown sneakers, that I bought for Php200 at some thrift shop. I had even put on lipstick! On this particular Sunday afternoon, all I wanted was to just sit about.

It was sunny and my bag was heavy as usual. We stayed in the shade of the waiting shed, with my bag resting on the bench. Lia was in the mood for some shots. Really, sometimes, she’d say no when I ask her if I can take a photo of her. You would say, why do you still ask? And my answer is, I don’t know. I just feel like I have to, just to be polite.

She had insisted on wearing my rosaries, calling them “princess necklaces” as on this day, she thought she was a princess wearing a “princess dress”.

I like how Lia has ideas of her own nearly all the time. It’s amusing to see what she comes up with, like on this shot that she had gamely posed for. There were a lot of shots actually, with her looking down, looking up, her foot this way and that way – poses that reminded me much of what my Travel Factor friends called “HF” for “high fashion”. I don’t do HF myself, so this was really entertaining for me.

Photography by Lia at Cadlao Beach Resort, Caalan, El Nido, Palawan

Just recently, Todd Owyoung tweeted or re-tweeted something about being asked by a 16-year old on tips on photography, the teenager having just recently acquired a Nikon d800. Yes it was striking that a 16-year old has a Nikon d800, but that was not the point. “How can a 16-year old have such an expensive camera!” is not what struck us, but the thought that what if at the age of 16, you already knew you wanted to be a photographer?

I am not really very careful with my gear. I tend to use it and abuse it. That is why I think nobody would want to buy my camera if I decide to sell it. This attitude comes with drawbacks too, as just last month, I spent Php5,000 on body and lens cleaning at Columbia Digital. My d80 18-135mm kit lens also acts now as a prime lens, with its aperture defaulted at 3.5 because the blades have fallen off as a result of Lia’s dropping it God knows when exactly, I don’t exactly keep track. I was told I could have it put back for the price of Php3,750, and my reply was, well now, lemme think about that for a minute.

Anyway, as I was saying, I let Lia play around with my camera and take her own photos. She does this all the time with my phone, and essentially, she has become my most avid photographer. She takes photos of me all the time!

These photos were all taken by Lia while we were waiting for our dinner at Cadlao Beach Resort in Caalan. This was of course after she was done lounging on all the day beds, and right before she had a fantastic time falling on and off the hammock.
