Having surfed all day til sunset, I was absolutely exhausted! Spy was already playing by the time I got to our room in Sebay, and I desperately needed a nap. I set the alarm to 9pm thinking I wouldn’t miss Razorback and Wolfgang because they wouldn’t play that early BUT they did! I woke up and I could hear Wolfgang playing!
The lineup for this night was DJ Joey Santos and DJ Niki Rojas, Franco, Razorback, Urbandub, Wolfgang, Pupil, Spy and Kalayo (formerly Pinikpikan). I was only getting dressed while Wolfgang was playing and we were having dinner of chicken and pork barbecues and hotdogs outside the concert venue when Kalayo was onstage.
Apparently, Razorback and Wolfgang had to play early because they had to be somewhere else.
I got in just in time for Franco. I’ve missed Franco when he played at Avenue Square in Naga City for last year’s Penafrancia Festival and missed him too at the Roots Rock Reggae gig at Metro Bar last October 17th so I wasn’t going to miss him at this year’s Surf and Music Festival!

FRANCO
Franco, now a solo artist, used to be a band made up of Franco Reyes (Inyo) on vocals and guitars, Gabby Alipe (Urbandub) and Paolo 8 Toleran (Queso) on guitars, Buwi Meneses (Parokya ni Edgar) on bass and JanJan Mendoza (Urbandub) on drums. BUT earlier this year, the band members decided to go separate ways and Franco now goes as a solo artist playing with sessionists during live performances. Read all about the story HERE.

Johnoy’s gig was actually supposed to be on May 7th, but Typhoon Bebeng (Related story: Bebeng Threatens Bicol Region) came lashing down on the entire region with strong winds and heavy rains, which caused Johnoy and his team, on a Cebu Pacific plane that hovered above the Pili Airport for some time waiting and hoping to land to no avail, to come back to Manila. Incidentally, that also spoiled our Pacquiao vs Mosely plans at Ramashinta Resort & Spa, as well as my Mother’s Day Special at Stonehouse Gardens.

This is the old poster, which we released back when Wharf Galley Rock Cafe was still at its old location in Elias Angeles St., near Nagaland Hotel and our partner printing press was Goldprint. This was also back in the time when I thought one could make do with only a few sponsors here and there (and boy, was I so wrong!)

Four months later, here are the photos from that beautiful gig at the old Wharf Galley Rock Cafe in Elias Angeles St.
We started with the usual soundcheck and then dinner at Frennie’s place. Afterwards, the band went back to their accommodations at Naga Manor, before coming back to the bar to play two amazing sets!

Sound check!

This is so far, my favorite Bl@h song, and really, I.do.not.know.why. This song just makes me happy. Maybe it’s all those days I spent chasing after cockroaches in that cockroach-ridden apartment my brother and I shared with an old lady and her grand daughter in Kalayaan Avenue, Quezon City back when I was a freshman in college. All those days I spent chasing after cockroaches not because I wanted to kill them all, but because I needed them, alive and kicking mind you, for my Biology 11 laboratory class. The irony of them cockroaches scampering and flying about when I have no need for them and their being all absent when I needed to catch a bottleful for my cockroach dissection activities. So funny. Loved those days.

This was an idea we started playing around with as early as May 28, the Goodleaf Dub Pilipinas gig at Wharf Galley Rock Cafe, and who would’ve known we’d actually do it?
Thank you TJ of Machine, Machine and Slicksurf Pilipinas for making this event happen. This is all your doing! I just helped in any way I could. I have loved working with you and I hope there would be more of Rock N Skate in Naga City.

This is going to be one awesome night! Thanks to all the bands who will be participating at the awarding ceremony and rock party at Wharf Galley Rock Cafe.
P.S.
Konti na lang magi-skate na rin ako. *winks*
