It was the music video of Chasing Pavements that caught my attention, that made me look for her album in record stores. It was that beautiful voice that on the first words, always made me think of Macy Gray (an absolute favorite of mine), that in turn evoked memories of my days in college and El Nido, which in turn evoked memories associated with Joss Stone. It always was a cascade of memories, deep-seated and quite uncontrollable.

Asked why I had liked that video, its simple but unique. The stop motion part is something I had looked forward to every time.

More than the video, I had loved the song and the lyrics. It had provided the perfect soundtrack to my nomadic life of the years past.

And then came her cover of Bob Dylan’s Make You Feel My Love, on which I wrote a short blog entry here back in 2009.

Adele’s 21 album found me in a plane to Chicago, really. I remember sitting on that plane for I think, a 14-hour trip from Shanghai, and watching advertisements on my screen for the release of her second album two days away while I listened to music and sipped glass after glass of milk, which was just about the only thing I could “eat” those days.

And how ironic it is that the entire album was the entire journey, from the very beginning to the very end. Let’s just make it clear, Adele is MY artist.

Bl@h was a Bicolano band that rose to fame in the 90s and I was busy hopping and skipping around in those days so as to notice what was playing in the airwaves and had no recollection whatsoever of this music. But I first heard of the band during Wharf Galley’s move from Elias Angeles St. to Avenue Square, and the band’s name kept coming up during random conversations.

It was not until I finally met Wawoo Brendia, who turned out to be the husband of one of my batchmates and friend from high school and had just come home from working abroad, and he brought up the plan of, finally, getting the band together for a reunion concert.

Back then, reuniting the band had seemed nearly impossible as the band’s original vocalist, Hammilan Favoreal, has long moved to Manila. Hammilan was to Bl@h as Ely was to Eraserheads. It’s just not the same if it’s not him.

Wawoo had given me a copy of the album and I had listened to it every so often. I ended up loving that song, Ipis. It just makes me smile every time I hear it.

So, when the live concert happened, it was truly an amazing experience for me. That band has taken my heart away, as well as this silly, silly song.

I love being silly. I miss being silly. These days I only get to be silly with Lia. Lia and me, we are silly, crazy girls.

I have videos of the gig, videos I don’t know when I’ll be able to post since I will be here in Bicol until the end of the month, where I only have access to the internet through my phone.

Did I need other reasons to go?

Sure, the entrance ticket was at P200, P50 higher than the usual gate fee at all the bars within Metro Manila, but what the heck, Franco and Wilabaliw in one night.

We got there at about 11pm and there were only 5 bands left. Wilabaliw was just on their way to the bar. We didn’t get to see the other bands play, but what we did see, was this band. And I think, this band made my night.

Who would’ve guessed I’d like a metal band? But I guess it was the percussions that did it. And there were a lot of percussions! I must admit it’s something I do not get to see often in Naga.

I wonder when they can come and play at Wharf Galley Rock Cafe. The last time they were in Naga was September 2009, and they played at West Park. I hope next time they are in Naga, they will be playing in Wharf Galley. I just hope I won’t get a memo from Avenue Square again.

Simplicio Elegante is just near the Cainta Junction. It will celebrate it’s first month on August 18. I remember seeing this building before, when I used to pay my bills at Meralco and cross the street on my way back home. I can swear the place used to be a KTV with GROs in it.

The bar is big, bigger than Wharf Galley, maybe as big as Merci Bar in Timog. It had a lot of technical difficulties. From microphones that just wouldn’t sync and music that just wouldn’t gel together. There was this band that I felt really sorry for. They were really good and I’m sure their music was better than it sounded in that bar, but well, maybe next time, they bring their own tech?

There were no other drinks being served other than Red Horse. Since I do not drink Red Horse beer, and I was hungry, and there were no empty tables left, and it seemed to me the staff had no intention of taking orders, we went over to 7 Eleven across the street and bought myself a bottle of Gilbey’s Premium, and dropped by Andok’s to get some liempo, that we ate while sitting on the sidewalk with bare hands, rakista style. (Dang, what in the world is happening?)

Practically everyone in the bar had tattooed arms, or long hair, or pierced body parts (ears, nose, chin, eyebrows, you name it.) In a sea of black shirts, I was the only one wearing green. When Franco started playing, everyone stood on the tables and chairs, and there you go, did group singing. H was having a great time, while I was hanging outside, trying to get a breath of fresh air (there is no such thing as fresh air in Metro Manila, but the air outside the bar was definitely fresher than the air inside.) I do not have to describe the kind of experience it was, being there, but suffice it to say, it made my nights in the old Wharf pale in comparison, in terms of smoke. Reeky icky, that’s all I can say.

Other than that, akina ang “Reklamador ng Taon Award.” Thank you.

I have no intention of bragging but I wish Naguenos would appreciate Wharf for what it is – a place where there is comfort and good music. At least we try to do our best. I’m not sure I’m coming back to this bar again, ever.

I’m at Route 196 way too often for the mere reason that it’s about a stone’s throw away from our house and the route is simple enough. Aside from that, I happen to like that bar. It’s quiet and it has open-air seating that allow us to talk to each other in peace when the music inside is too loud, or breathe better when the air inside is too stuffy with smoke. I wanted to say “breathe fresh air” but this is Manila, there is no such thing as fresh air, so scratch that.

We really weren’t rushing out of the house because I didn’t think Flush and the Toilets was playing first. As it happened, we got in exactly 1 minute after they were done playing. That was disappointing. I was looking forward to watching and listening to Amrei sing 80s songs again.

But it was refreshing to see Dan again. I love seeing Dan. Now that is a breathe of fresh air. That guy. Always.

Ya, that’s me showing off my 32-piece set of teeth.

I can’t count how many times I’ve seen Kaze but I remember the first time I saw them perform. It was at Top Junk’s anniversary gig and “Kapit Mahal” music video launch last September. (I had blogs about it but well, they’re missing. Gone in the database haywire). I even have a video of them here and here. And I distinctly remember not liking them – until I saw them perform with a violin. I’m biased like that. I like any band with a violin in it. It’s just mesmerizing. I did play the violin at one point in my life… and on this night, I almost wished I still did.

The last band to play, of course, was Top Junk.

That was one fun night! People were dancing. That made me wonder if there’ll ever be that kind of dancing in Wharf. I’ve observed Naguenos to be quite self-conscious. Even found myself singing along to Hung Over Trippin and wondering even more, “I know the lyrics?!”

Though Amrei left early and I didn’t notice John and his girlfriend, or even Che leave, we stayed late into the morning, way later than we intended, just because my friend Bibs was there with us. We didn’t make it to The Smiths night with Your Imaginary Friends so we thought we’d better make it then.

While the two of us were deep in on-the-verge-of-drunkenness (yeah that would be just me) conversation, H was doing some “integration”. That was just funny, seeing Dan, the Romawacs and Top Junk with H, sitting around a garden table, talking about biking and running and trails.

We all left at about 3:30(!) and were of course, the last ones to go. Really, we were the last, last, last ones to go. Fun night though. I wish the music lasted all night…

We made it to Meiday! Heyday! because I wanted some Moonleaf Milk Tea – which we did not find because their booth kept moving about in that crowded place.

I was just craving for milk tea the entire night, even when Coy found us, hanging out by the restrooms, away from the crowd, and wondering what to do and where to go.

What I like about going to Cubao X is that there is always a chance of bumping into a friend or two. One of our friends from college was even at Pen Pen’s restaurant, a new resto owned by Pen and Ping Medina, that was having its soft opening that night. I even saw my friend Marcus Adoro, who almost jumped at the sight of me. I always look different every time we see each other. And then of course, there was Dan. The Discoball was playing that night too.

We left shortly after The Discoball played. I was tipsy by then, thanks to the few bottles of Tanduay Ice. Perhaps that explains the big smiles on my face in the photos. It was, over all, a good night. A good night of good music and good friends. I wish Nick and Kalai were there too. Going to Cubao X without them just doesn’t complete the experience. Soon, soon…. I hope?

Amidst all hesitations, not to mention warnings and advise to cancel, we proceeded with the metal night, organized by Metal Knights Production, at the new Wharf Galley in Avenue Square.

The night was cut short, and for the very first time Wharf Galley was closed at 1am, because of a brawl that started inside Wharf and was continued outside, with beer bottles breaking, still in the premises of Avenue Square. I was assured this was not going to happen, repeatedly told the audiences are also peace-loving music lovers, that the production can control their crowd – but was proven wrong.

And because of that, I, as owner and manager of Wharf Galley and tenant of Avenue Square received warnings from the head of security of Avenue Square. Bummer. That left me with no choice but to cancel all Metal Knights Productions events to be held at Wharf Galley. That doesn’t mean they cannot hold metal nights anymore. They can, but I will not be able to sponsor the venue. But hey, at least we gave it a try, yes?

No to musical discrimination, but let us all maintain peace. No brawls please. Is respect really very hard to uphold these days?

So I finally have Adele’s album and it is now playing non-stop on my player. I love Adele. Even back when no one else was listening to her songs and the people on the counters at music stores said to me, “Who?!” every time I asked if they had her album. Interestingly, she was preceded by Amy Winehouse on that Grammy Award. I love, love, love Amy Winehouse. Though Ryan used to say to me, “Amy who?!?” Oh well..
