Renowned director and choreographer of the well received and applauded contemporary adaptation of Francisco Baltazar’s “Orosman at Zafira†opens Dulaang Unibersidad ng Pilipinas’ (DUP) 36th theater season with a new material that speaks of the life and works of one of the most important figures in Philippine history.
Dexter M. Santos spearheads a company of distinguished artists in a performance that merges text, dance, film, and visual arts to reintroduce the current generation to the life and works of Dr. Jose P. Rizal. Using mixed popular media, artists from different disciplines collaborate to produce different and new perspectives on the works and life of Rizal to underline the fact that his stories and his life are as ever relevant and pertinent to the understanding of our culture and ourselves as Filipinos.
This original production is scored with live music of emerging original Filipino band, “Happy Days Aheadâ€, led by William Elvin Manzano who pens the music and songs accompanying the audience in their journey to the world of Rizal. The material will include works of eminent and critically acclaimed poets, playwrights, choreographers, filmmakers and musicians. Some of the collaborating artists are Pinoy rock legend Dong Abay, notable commercial and film director Joaquin Pedro Valdez, Palanca multi – award winners Layeta Bucoy and Floy Quintos, published author Vlad Gonzales, new found TV sensation and Mula sa Puso star JM De Guzman, and leading figure in children’s literature in the Philippines, the loved Rene Villanueva. Also lending their talents to help in capturing the kaleidoscopic facets of Rizal are Manix Abrera, Chips Beltran, Winter David, Deo Dela Cruz, Jeffrey Garcia, Al Garcia, Gerson Abesamis, and Adi Lopez.

WE DO NOT SLEEP
a “play” for & about our generation of insomniac, manic,
mechanical, technological, dreamless (kids)
and the search for a fight and
flight.
WE DO NOT SLEEP is an experimental play which utilizes devised theatre. Through a highly collaborative process, the play gathers various texts, images, sound, movement – the body, in order to create a piece that speaks about that anxiety our generation feels at 3 am in the morning. Bothered by progress, change, disconnection, the mundane and extreme, the play voices out these panic attacks that render us sleepless.

I woke up at nine in the morning and thus arrived thirty minutes late for David Henry Hwang‘s talk and playwrights’ forum at the Carlos P. Romulo Hall in U.P.’s CAL Building.
I was there to document so the first thing I did was take photos. I know Mr. Hwang was talking about how to write a play when I got there but I could not listen to the full details while I was trying to be as un-intrusive as possible with my documentation.
The hall was packed with students as well as faculty members.

I thought it would be nice to repost this article Gibbs Cadiz wrote for the Philippine Daily Inquirer in August 2007. I have been thinking about this article a lot for the following reasons:
1. Now once again, I am as involved in the Lab Fest as I was in 2007. During VLF3, I saw all the sets and was very much involved in almost all of the aspects of it. Something I did not get to do for VLF4 as I missed a few sets, declined directing a play, then a staged reading and finally resigned as actor due to personal reasons; and something I did not get to do at all for VLF5, as I only caught JUST one set.
2. I see the same old familiar faces and names, and the new faces are those of the people I have worked with before – in Tanghalang Ateneo and Dulaang U.P.. or if not have worked with, went to school with, made friends because of friends of friends of friends. The theater world is really small.
This year I am missing Rogelio Braga. Really, I am. I’ve always loved how More

LULU by Frank Wedekind
LULU is a story of a person who has no qualms about the body and it’s sexual needs. Lulu, who is the alluring woman in the English version and the captivating transsexual in Filipino, is a being able to explore and express her desires without compromise or guilt. Adored and lusted by men, women and creatures of the world, she takes them to a dance of bodily freedom, of the mind’s liberation and of utter ecstasy. But like any other person, Lulu searches for the other that could accept and understand her seemingly deviant nature.
In her hunt, Lulu meets a myriad of “civilized beasts”: painters, writers, the educated and the ignorant, the rich and poor men, the young and the dying who are upright and honorable by day but transform to hungry animals in the dark. Lulu embraces each person only to find him or her weak and forever trapped by man’s idea of propriety.
Che Ramos and Tuxqs Rutaquio topbills the play as LULU.
Acey Aguilar, Angeli Bayani, Alexander Cortez, Jules de la Paz, Ian Lomongo, Jojit Lorenzo, Missy Maramara, Paolo O’hara, Meynard Penalosa, Andoy Ranay,Gabs Santos, JC Santos and Randy Villarama are included in the star studded cast.
