I have been involved in theater since 2000, and worked with The U.P. Repertory Company, Dulaang U.P., Tanghalang Ateneo, Tanghalang Pilipino, and in the process has met many members of other theater organizations, and that has made me familiar with all the struggles a stage actor or even worker, face for the love of the art. So I was quite happy when I learned that an organization was made to support the theater actors of the country, in the form of the Theater Actors Guild (TAG).
In an effort to provide health cards for the Theater Actors Guild (TAG)’s members, the organization, with the leadership of Kalila Aguilos, is mounting its first major fundraising activity. Local theater actors often sacrifice their health among other things for the sake of “the show must go on” and would rather suffer than deny the audience of the joy of watching live theater.* The fundraising activity is a small step but it is definitely a start, so let us all help out and support our local theater actors by buying tickets to the Himala gala night on March 15. This small token of support will go a long way.

*Some text by Ria Pangilinan.
After almost a decade, Himala returns with a 10th anniversary celebration of its music. Be captivated with the stellar voices of May Bayot, Isay Alvarez Seña, Cynthia Guico, Jon Joven, Oj Mariano, Dulce, Mia Reonal Bolaños, Myke Salomon, and the University of the East Chorale with some of the original cast members and new artists as you listen to the songs of Vincent DeJesus and Ricky Lee with piano accompaniment by Jed Balsamo under the direction of Soxie Topacio.
Limited performances only from 15 March to 24 March 2013 at the PETA-PHINMA Theater located along Eymard Drive near Quezon City Sports Club.

What price do we pay.. when everything is for sale?

What happens to a society that is overrun by greed and materialism? By shifting moral values and by acquisitive desires?
Collection, the much-awaited new work from acclaimed playwright Floy Quintos is a dark comedy that paints a disturbing picture of society obsessed with conspicuous consumption, surface glamour, and the endless, unsatisfying pursuit of the Next Big Thing. Collection closes Dulaang UP‘s 37th Season.

In this artistic vision of a materialist hell, a fictional government agency, the National Commission on the Disposal of Philippine Patrimony, has sanctioned the sale of historical and national treasures like the Banaue Rice Terraces, the Chocolate Hills and the Malolos Constitution. The proceeds go to a national lottery designed to alleviate poverty through dole outs.

Dulaang UP’s second offering on its 37th Season, The Seagull/Ang Tagak, is a compelling discourse about art, life, and love presented through intricate characters and situations in what is widely considered to be master dramatist Anton Chekhov’s greatest work. In the middle of these romantic and artistic conflicts are more elaborately developed characters, a staple of Chekhov’s works. This comedy in four acts effectively discusses themes in art and life that remain relevant in this day and age.
The Seagull/Ang Tagak is directed by the venerable Tony Mabesa. The production stars theater veterans Ana Abad Santos, Frances Makil-Ignacio, Ces Quesada, Leo Rialp, Menggie Cobarrubias, Jeremy Domingo, Alfonso Deza, Stella Cañete Balucas and promising actors Carlo Tarobal, Zafrullah Masahud, Nadine Samonte, and Karen Gaerlan.
It was staged both in English (translation by Tom Stoppard) and Filipino (translated by Rolando Tinio). The production is on its last run this week.
Here are some production photos from the Filipino version October 3rd. (The entire set is HERE.)

Bona, a film about a young schoolgirl played by Nora Aunor who became a die-hard fan of Gardo, a wannabe actor portrayed by Philip Salvador, reemerges this August as Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) opens its 45th theater season.
Originally directed by National Artist for Film and one of PETA’s founding members Lino Brocka and written by Cenen Ramones, was also an official entry in the 1981 Cannes International Film Festival Director’s Fortnight and was cited as one of the “100 Best Films of the World” by The Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles.
Aunor’s portrayal of Bona won her the Best Actress Award in the 1980 Gawad Urian Awards.

Layeta Bucoy, who wrote the stage adaptation, shares her insight about the difference of the new Bona to the film: “Eugene’s Bona is more empowered; she is financially independent and even supports her family. [Eugene, as Bona], I believe, has the stamina, range, and imagination for a physically and emotionally taxing role.”(1)
Set in contemporary Manila, PETA’s stage adaptation of Bona revolves around Eugene Domingo, a spinster call center agent who sees the televised pitiful background of Gino Sanchez immediately becomes a fan of the Star of Tomorrow wannabe. In her desire to help him jumpstart his showbiz career, she gives him everything she has and turns her back to everything she values. Blinded by her belief in him, she allows all his faults to freely slide as she finds herself drowning in the surreal quicksand of worship and pity where manipulation blurs the line between prey and predator, the dismissive god and the faithful worshiper.
Director: Soxie Topacio
Writer: Layeta Bucoy
Music: Teresa Barroso
Cast: Eugene Domingo, Edgar Allan Guzman, Phil Noble, Joey Paras, Jeff Henson-Dee, She Maala, Olive Nieto, Dudz Teraña, Junevir Tabor, Juliene Mendoza, Raffy Tejada, Jason Barcial, BJ Forbes, and Anna Luna

You may visit the PETA Theater’s website for detailed information on the performance schedules, and who to contact. The schedule is found here: http://petatheater.com/shows/items/bona/
