Updates for Now

Musings By August 27, 2012 Tags: , No Comments

Hi everyone, if you are wondering why there have been no new posts in the past two days, it’s because I have been busy crossing out one of my travel wish list for the year – a visit to San Vicente, Palawan, the location of the longest beach (about 14 kms!) in the Philippines. I first heard about it back in 2005 from two guys from Boracay who brought over their dirt bikes just to check out the beach and I have been wanting to see and check it out for myself.

The trip was not as difficult as I thought it was going to be and we tried to do everything we could in the day and a half we we’re there. We we’re able to check out the beaches but have not been able to visit the waterfalls, or go island hopping, or even take the trip to Port Barton but there might be a next time!

We took as many photos as we could and I’ll write about the trip soon.

We went sailing on a yacht around Bacuit Bay today and that pretty much took the entire day.

That’s it for now. I still have a very busy week ahead of me as I also want to see Nakpan beach as well in Calitang and Nagkalit-Kalit waterfalls here in El Nido (Yes we are still here but counting the days til we get back to the city) as well as, hopefully, get that diver’s license.

I also hope to do a walking tour of the town to compare with the many photos of the town I took six years ago to show how much things around here have changed. I’m happy about the many improvements but sad about how things are deteriorating because of disregard for town planning and environmental conservation.

I need to do a list of all the places to eat as well as accommodations in town too. It might also be helpful to do a list of Things to do and the likes. All those are quite daunting because there are now about a gazillion places to stay here, as opposed to back in 2005, as well as more restaurants.

So many things to do, so many photos to take, so many things to write about, plus so much work to do as well, and so little time. (So true.. so true.)

Well, until then. I just wanted to keep you guys posted.

Angku (and Lia)

Give Me A Hug… and That’s An Order

Life in El Nido, MOMents By August 24, 2012 Tags: , , , , , , No Comments

Through all of Lia and I’s many ups, and a significant enough number of downs, is a blossoming friendship. More than being mother and daughter, we are best friends.

The other night, as I was slaving away, like I have been the past two weeks, she and I were staying up late, me with my two laptops, many text books, pens, notebooks, and many paperwork, and she with her portable dvd player and two books she has “borrowed” from God knows where, I suddenly hear her in a very serious, commanding tone, “Mama, hug me.”

Startled, unsure of what I actually heard, the tone being commanding, my forehead creased in lines, I asked, “What?”

“Hug me!”

Bewildered at where this was coming from, I went over to her, where she promptly put her arms around me and held me quietly and tightly for about a full minute. I glanced at what she was watching, wondering if this sudden need to hug me or be hugged by me came from what she was watching, and saw that she has been watching an episode from her favorite Little Einsteins show and that there was absolutely nothing there that could have prompted this overwhelming show of emotion.

She proceeded to flip her book with one hand, while another arm was around my shoulders and we we’re like that, for about five minutes.

Ah, my darling sweet little girl… You’re the love of my life.

A Sea of Clouds… Stars in the Seas

Palawan, Photography By August 22, 2012 Tags: , , , , , , , , , No Comments

I went looking for old photos taken back in 2007 and found some photos I already forgot I took and some I didn’t even realize I had.

I remember the first time I took that 16-seater Dornier plane to El Nido, May 2005, and being told which side to sit at. Going from Manila to El Nido, choose the left side if you want to see islands, there is next to nothing on the right side…. except a sea of clouds.

Marimegmeg Beach, El Nido, Palawan… on a GENER-ous Day

Life in El Nido, Palawan, Photography By August 21, 2012 Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , No Comments

The typhoon Gener was whipping the islands with non-stop heavy rains and winds, classes were suspended, and yet, one of our faculty members who had just arrived and had not been to the beach since, wanted to go to the beach. So we headed to the nearest pretty beach in Brgy. Corong-corong – a trike’s ride away out of town proper and a few minutes walk down a muddy path.

There are a few beach resorts on this strip of beach, right before travelers from Puerto Princesa arrive at the town proper of El Nido. Las Cabanas is one of them. In fact, there is a Las Cabanas signage right by the road. But for the most part, this beach is a private one, and you need to bring your own food or drinks or your beach mat.

We we’re blessed with a little bit of sun for some time, which allowed me to take the following photos.

El Nido, even in bad weather, is still breathtaking!

Hanging out at the Beach – The Mag-Nanay Edition, El Nido, Palawan

Life in El Nido, MOMents, Palawan, Photography By August 21, 2012 Tags: , , , , , , No Comments

We went to hang out at Pukka Bar on this day, and the weather was nice, the light was good, and I came home with 400 photos in my camera. I take RAW+basic jpeg shots so that translates to 200 photos. Half of them were taken in the first twenty minutes we were there, and half of them were taken after I was done with the camera and my daughter and I were just playing and hanging out.

These photos were taken by Likha. He has the habit of stealing up on us and taking our photos. I had no idea he was taking pictures of us until I got home and looked at my camera.

In most photos, you can see Lia with a backpack. Sometimes it has a water bottle, a face towel and a bottle of her milk. Most times though it only has her toys. We make it a point to bring her beach toys every time we go to town.

Lia said, “Mama, will you play with me in the sand please?”

Brillante Mendoza’s Captive

Movies By August 21, 2012 Tags: , , , , No Comments

Directed by Brillante Mendoza
Written by Brillante Mendoza, Patrick Bancarel, Boots Agbayani Pastor, and Arlyn dela Cruz
Cast: Isabelle Huppert, Kathy Mulville, Mark Zanetta, Raymond Bagatsing, Joel Torre, Mon Confiado, Maria Isabel Lopez,  Ronnie Lazaro, Sid Lucero, Mercedes Cabral, Neil Ryan Sese, Rustica Carpio, Angel Aquino, and many others.
Runtime: 120mins

Filipino director Brillante Mendoza is back with another grim kidnapping story inspired by the May 2001 kidnapping of local and foreign tourists in Dos Palmas Resort in Palawan by Abu Sayyaf. Though weaker in terms of shock and quality as his 2009 film Kinatay and the film failed to win any award at the Berlin film festival held last February, it received the highest rating from the Film Development Council of the Philippines’ Cinema Evaluation Board (CEB).

It had its Philippine premiere at the Citi-Rustan’s French Film Festival, and is now being seen and heard in the Philippines through various reviews and social media support.

Richard Bolisay, Oggs Cruz and Jessica Zafra each wrote a review on the film.

A Call for Support for Eseng Cruz’s Limang Dipang Tao

Movies By August 20, 2012 Tags: , , , , , , 3 Comments

Eseng Cruz (director and scriptwriter) of the full-length Independent Film, “Limang Dipang Tao”, finalist for the Second Leg (Ikalawang Yugto): Sineng Pambansa National Film Festival, of the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), is asking for your support in his first-ever full-length project. They are currently shooting the film, but are still in the process of looking for investors/producers/sponsors to have additional funds from the initial grant of FDCP.

Deadline of submission for the final cut is set on 1st of October 2012. They are badly in need of your support so they can proceed in funding quality equipment, allot fees that are rightly due to professional and non-professional actors, and spare funds to post-production materials (i.e. editing, musical scoring, etc.). Your help will be greatly appreciated. Be part of this film’s success!
