Friendship… and then some.

Music and Arts By July 30, 2012 Tags: , , , , , No Comments

Here are two of the images that got my attention recently, shared by my friends on Facebook.

The first one being about friends… and the other about music.

I know the first image probably looks corny but Snoopy reminds me of childhood and how I used to collect his posters, to the point that I would give my sisters posters too so they can decorate their room with it. Him and Garfield.

Besides, my friend who is now in Zimbabwe, shared it, and she is one of my most treasured friends. She and the rest of the gang were with me during my goriest, most horrific, days in Naga.

This is What We do on Lazy Sundays

Life in El Nido By July 30, 2012 Tags: , , , , , , No Comments

We were bound for the beach again even though I was not in the mood for some swimming. My mood had me dress myself in a tight red top that my friend Summer had given me for my birthday many summers ago – it says Wiitarded; a black skinny jeans, the only pair of pants I brought to the island; and my favorite brown sneakers, that I bought for Php200 at some thrift shop. I had even put on lipstick! On this particular Sunday afternoon, all I wanted was to just sit about.

It was sunny and my bag was heavy as usual. We stayed in the shade of the waiting shed, with my bag resting on the bench. Lia was in the mood for some shots. Really, sometimes, she’d say no when I ask her if I can take a photo of her. You would say, why do you still ask? And my answer is, I don’t know. I just feel like I have to, just to be polite.

She had insisted on wearing my rosaries, calling them “princess necklaces” as on this day, she thought she was a princess wearing a “princess dress”.

I like how Lia has ideas of her own nearly all the time. It’s amusing to see what she comes up with, like on this shot that she had gamely posed for. There were a lot of shots actually, with her looking down, looking up, her foot this way and that way – poses that reminded me much of what my Travel Factor friends called “HF” for “high fashion”. I don’t do HF myself, so this was really entertaining for me.

Matinloc Island with Faculty and Staff

Life in El Nido, Palawan By July 26, 2012 Tags: , , , , , 1 Comment

One of our regular activities for the faculty and staff at school, at least when we are not busy with meetings and school programs, is island hopping on the Geographic with Kuya Mesach, our ever-reliable and trusted boatman.

We were in front of El Nido Corner Beach Bar and Restaurant early in the morning, armed with lots of food and water, as well as good spirits.

Every time I pass by El Nido Corner on my way to Caalan, this sign always gets me:

El Nido Corner Restaurant

No, not the “Kayak for Rent, Included Safety Best” but the “Sunset Offers from 16:00-18:30“! I have to give it to the resto because these colors are very enticing, at least to me, on whom advertising really works all the time, being the kind of person who would want to buy the cheeseburger that was shown during a commercial break or the Laing on the billboard right outside the airport so on and so forth.

Photography by Lia at Cadlao Beach Resort, Caalan, El Nido, Palawan

Life in El Nido, Palawan, Photography By July 21, 2012 Tags: , , , , , , , No Comments

Just recently, Todd Owyoung tweeted or re-tweeted something about being asked by a 16-year old on tips on photography, the teenager having just recently acquired a Nikon d800. Yes it was striking that a 16-year old has a Nikon d800, but that was not the point. “How can a 16-year old have such an expensive camera!” is not what struck us, but the thought that what if at the age of 16, you already knew you wanted to be a photographer?

I am not really very careful with my gear. I tend to use it and abuse it. That is why I think nobody would want to buy my camera if I decide to sell it. This attitude comes with drawbacks too, as just last month, I spent Php5,000 on body and lens cleaning at Columbia Digital. My d80 18-135mm kit lens also acts now as a prime lens, with its aperture defaulted at 3.5 because the blades have fallen off as a result of Lia’s dropping it God knows when exactly, I don’t exactly keep track. I was told I could have it put back for the price of Php3,750, and my reply was, well now, lemme think about that for a minute.

Anyway, as I was saying, I let Lia play around with my camera and take her own photos. She does this all the time with my phone, and essentially, she has become my most avid photographer. She takes photos of me all the time!

These photos were all taken by Lia while we were waiting for our dinner at Cadlao Beach Resort in Caalan. This was of course after she was done lounging on all the day beds, and right before she had a fantastic time falling on and off the hammock.

A Visit to Cadlao Beach Resort, Caalan, El Nido, Palawan

Life in El Nido, Palawan By July 21, 2012 Tags: , , , , , , 7 Comments

Coming from Makulay, we decided to walk farther down the beach of Caalan and visit the Cadlao Beach Resort. We took the path by the beach first but later decided that it was easier to walk on the dirt path rather than on the rocky beach. We crossed at the Gawad Kalinga El Nido Sunset Village – that I was surprised to see, to be honest. “A Gawad Kalinga village in El Nido, wow!” is what I thought. This wonder was further enhanced by a rainbow that was visible on the sky right above the village that was just too good to pass up. Granted, the rainbow does not appear in the photo, but Lia was fascinated as usual and that deserved a stop, a stop that was long enough to take out the camera and take a few snapshots.
