Imagine living in a time when poetry was simply an everyday language. Beauty was magnified ten folds, pandemonium was disguised in lyrical verses, and love was simply glorious. Chaos translated to poetry is Orosman at Zafira, a play written in the 1850s by Francisco Baltazar (Balagtas). It tells the story of three warring tribes in thirst for power, a plot we could still relate to today.
On its 35th theater season, Dulaang UP offers a modernization of Balagtas’ famous komedya, a remake of a tradition that made it more accessible to this generation. But the universality of this play lies in the encompassing love that all of the characters of this play are in constant search for.
“Pag-ibig, pag-ibig, at pag-ibig parin…”
It is said that love can start a million wars. Orosman at Zafira denotes all kinds of love: from familial to romantic, from egoistic to altruistic. Every character gets caught up in their own connotation of love; to each his own definition, his own reason, and his own consumption. From a ruler whose power was usurped by an individual with an intense desire to reign; a gallant man who fell into a forbidden love for a strong-willed woman; a blood-relative wanting to gain what isn’t in his hands; two courageous lovers willing to fight for their love; tribes who clash to claim pride, dignity and sovereignty; wars that tell the story of individuals caught up in their own private battles- all but a love story, told by the best storytellers of the theater today.
While the prose is harmoniously intertwined with the overwhelming live music offered by Carol Bello, unspoken poetry is seen through astonishing dances created by director & choreographer Dexter M. Santos which altogether made this play a nominee in the 21st Aliw Awards for Best Musical Production and Best Stage Director.
After its first successful run two years ago, Orosman at Zafira will return to undoubtedly leave its audience astounded yet again. This 2010, preparations are set to make this rerun production of a high quality similar to, or even exceeding, the state of the original staging. Orosman at Zafira is Dulaang UP’s first offering of the season aptly themed: “Return Engagement: Plays Deserving a Second Look”, a re-run of the most successful Dulaang UP productions.
For an overall theater experience that should not be missed, Orosman at Zafira gives us a glimpse in to a world ruled by passion and which ultimate goal is to push the limits of modern day storytelling.
It is said that love can start a million wars, but it is also with love that we end all of which we’ve started.
