SI TECHIE, SI TEKNOBOY AT SI JUANAB
BY ARTHUR KATIPUNAN
The New Breed Category: Finalist, Full Length Feature
2010 Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival and Competition
Techie and Jay, both OFWs from Qatar, decide to come home for two weeks to get married.
Techie is nurturing a plan to meet her virtual lover, Teknoboy, before her wedding day. The story unfolds when Techie connives with her high school best friend, Juana, a TV writer turned struggling indie filmmaker, to be with Teknoboy.
The two women journey through Pinoy cyber culture and its many facets — online romance, cyber addiction, Facebook reunion, hi-tech baptismal party, 3G doctor, digital wedding, cyber sex — in the process discovering many things about their lives, dreams and the society they live in.
The evolution of cyber Pinoys and how relationships unfold in the middle of a hi-tech society form the core of this film.
Scriptwriter, Producer, Director ART KATIPUNAN has always been a passionate disciple of visual arts particularly, films. His journey as a scriptwriter, a producer and a director began when he entered the world of theater. In 1998, he joined Dramatis Personae Theater Company which involves intensive works in the plays, Miss Julie, Waiting for Godot, Glass Menagerie, and Metamorphosis. After his college studies, he immediately went to New York, pursued a career in accounting and, like most of young graduates, tried to have a taste of the corporate grind. His stay in New York gave him a lot of life-changing experiences that would ultimately, one day, lead him to a realization that he wanted to be home again. With the idea of ‘home’ came the resurrection of his deepest longings for the arts. His dreams continue to soar and to take shape. In 1999, he was chosen to become one of the Batch 11 scholars of the Ricky Lee’s Scriptwriting Workshop. Out of almost 800 applicants for this batch, only 35 were chosen to experience the journey of learning under the great master. Art will always remember this point in his life as very inspiring and moving. Under Ricky’s tutelage, Art embraced more his arts, dreams, and relationships. At a perfect time, when he felt he was ready to move on from theater to film, he was taken in as the Production Designer for the movie Batang Pro of Regal Films. From that assignment, he went on as one of the episode writers of the ABS-CBN’s crime docu-drama, Katapat: Mayor Fred Lim (1999-2000). His promise as a dedicated worker was not left unnoticed and before he knew it, he was already directing and producing segment assignments. By 2001, he was made part of the team for another crime docu-drama, Kabalikat: Senator Loren Legarda. From 2003 to 2005, he made substantial contributions to the success of the first digital TV horror docu-drama show, Nginig as the Executive Producer. After his long years with ABS-CBN, he decided to work independently. His first independent digital short film titled Pokpok, Ang Pambansang Manggagawa, tells the lives of the working class who, at one point or another, have given up their integrity to become prostitutes figuratively. His upcoming indie film titled Si Techie, Si Teknoboy, at Si JuanaB., to be produced under the auspices of the Cinemalaya 2010 Grants, is his first full-length film.
