Auditions for Tanghalang Pilipino’s “Banaag at Sikat, Isang Rock Musical”

Tanghalang Pilipino, CCP’s resident theater company, announces the first of its auditions for its 24th Theater Season: Idol! The search is on for the cast of BANAAG AT SIKAT, Isang Rock Musical, TP’s season opener. Auditions will be held on May 19 at the CCP-Bulwagang Amado Hernandez (Conference Room), from 2 PM to 7 PM.

Banaag at Sikat book cover

With book and lyrics by National Artist for Literature Bien Lumbera, music by Lucien Letaba, production design by National Artist for Theater Design Salvador Bernal, and under the direction of Jose Estrella, BANAAG AT SIKAT, Isang Rock Musical, is based on Lope K. Santos’ groundbreaking literary opus of the same title about the breakup of the Filipino family and the rise of socialism in the country. It universalizes its socialist theme by juxtaposing central, turn-of-the century Philippines (1911) with music that’s very much today, Indie Rock.

BANAAG AT SIKAT, Isang Rock Musical will open at the Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino (CCP-Little Theater) on August 6, 2010. This rock musical is a bold experimentation in its deployment of contemporary musical idioms as pop, folk, blues, jazz, bass rhythms, brass riffs, melodic anthems to the overriding rock genre while it fuses with some traditional Filipino-Spanish rhythms (danza and tiempo de balitao) in modern orchestrations.

Our Beloved and Departed Nikon D80

I have no record of what exactly was the first ever photo our beloved and departed Nikon D80 took but this happens to be the last photo it ever took.

Guijalo port, Caramoan, Camarines Sur

This photo was taken on February 17, 2010 using a Nikon D80. - Flickr

Did I ever tell you what happened to our Nikon D80? I did tell you about what I did to my (also beloved) Olympus E-500, the first ever DSLR I ever owned, but I guess I did not get to tell you what happened to our Nikon D80.

Let me tell you what.

Actually, a few months before it finally died on me, we were having issues with its ability to read the battery charge correctly. It would tell us the battery was empty even when it was fully charged but we’d somehow trick it into reading correctly by turning it on and off repeatedly very quickly. We knew there was a problem, and at first we thought it was the battery, so much so that we even both an extra one, but we didn’t really do anything close to bringing it to a service center for a check-up. That’s actually one lesson learned: If you own something this expensive, you better take care of it.

Henrys Camera receipt for the Nikon D80

Henry's Camera & Photo Supply receipt for the Nikon D80 dated September 2007

I brought it with me and Lia on our last trip to Bicol. It was working fine, from Manila to Albay to CWC to Naga and all the way to Caramoan. On February 17, 2010, we were on the boat in Guijalo Port, Caramoan bound for Sabang, San Jose, when I snapped a photo and then the camera went dead.

I managed to bring it to Columbia Photo Megamall on March 4. I was told it would be brought to the main service center located in San Francisco del Monte, Q.C. for an assessment. A week later, I was informed the camera needed a part replacement. I was quoted a total of about P5,000+ and was told the part would take 3 weeks to arrive since it will have to be ordered from Japan. Holy Week had to be counted  off the 3 weeks so a month and a week later, Nikon technician tells me the part had arrived, they had opened the body and found more parts needed to be replaced. The new quote was something close to P14,000.

I had my friend’s wedding to shoot as favor on April 16th and a trip to Calaguas Island on April 17th. I needed a camera so badly that I withdrew my 18-135mm Nikkor lens at the service center and borrowed my sister’s Nikon D40.

Three days ago, technician called to tell me the latest part they had ordered from Japan had arrived, they had opened the body further and found out that the damage is extensive. “The board is insect-damaged, I tried my best to clean out the board from which the juices of fried ants had stuck but the board is too damaged. Besides, it is also water-damaged,” technician explained while in my head, memories of many many trips to the beach, surfing, snorkeling, island-hopping etc. etc., flashed by really quick. Hahaha. “If you will opt to have this repaired, it will cost you a total of about P24,000,” and my jaw dropped of course, “And in that, my recommendation is: just buy a new camera.” And that was it.

I am looking for a new body. Since I love my 50mm f/1.8 lens, my only options are a D90 or a D300. I am looking for a second-hand body because I simply cannot afford a brand-new one. I will be on the look out on my mailing lists as well as forums for one. Aside from that, I also have to save. I am looking at at least P40,000 for this. :(

Our D80 and I had a great and relatively long life together, I have a lot of photos to remember it by. I will miss you my camera, but I hope, not by much. :P

Superstitions in Moving to a New Home

Since we moved to a new home, I decided to look at some of the superstitions involved in such an activity. I remember when we moved from the condo to the apartment, we were told to have a full container of rice as well as a lot of salt and sugar. And that we did too.

I have previously looked at some blogs about these superstitions and I read that you are supposed to move in when the moon is waxing – but sadly, that was not something we could do. The house was not ready when the moon was waxing and it would be too late to wait for this month’s. I read you should not move on particular days, but I got conflicting information on this, as some said Saturday was a good day while others said it was not. I did read that the date should be on one that had a number that when written ended on top rather than on the bottom, like zero and eight.

Here are some of the Filipino superstitions I stumbled into:

  • When you move to a new house, always enter first with a loaf of bread and a new broom. Never bring an old broom into the house.
  • If the previous owners have been kind, they will have left some bread (or rice, depending where you are in the world) and salt behind for you. If the realtor got rid of it, don’t worry, just make sure the first person to enter carries these items, plus a new broom.

The Big Move… to the Big Project

After years of moving around, from my mom’s 36 sq.m. condo unit in Taguig, to the rented 2-bedroom, 2-storey apartment in Pasig; and months of house hunting, we finally found a house-and-lot we could afford. After weeks of working on the paper work, signing bank documents, cleaning out the house we are moving into and moving in little bits of stuff we own one day at a time, we finally saw the day when the rented movers truck loaded what (little) possessions we own and drove to the house we will now call our home – the place we will now call our permanent address.

This is us leaving…

Lia’s Milestones at 13 months

Lia turns 13 months today and I took some time to go over the 13-18 months milestone chart from Baby Center.

At 13 months, these are the things Lia can do:

  • Bends over and picks up an object
  • Holds out arm or leg to help you dress her
  • Combines words and gestures to make needs known
  • Rolls a ball back and forth
  • Eats with fingers
  • Empties containers of contents
  • Imitates others
  • Initiates games
  • Responds to instructions (e.g., “give me a kiss”)

Lia’s Luggage

The stupid Mac newbie that is me just recently realized she has an SD card slot in her Mac and it was thus useful in downloading yesterday’s photos of Lia with her luggage.

I have been packing our stuff little by little and moving small stuff to the new house every now and then in preparation for the big move on Saturday – May 8!

Yesterday I emptied the overhead cabinets and the linen closet, as well as packed some clothes and bags.

In the middle of it all, Lia found her luggage. We bought a set of three – a large one for Ryan, a medium one for me, and a small one for her. I guess she knows which one is hers. :)

Macbook Pro Protection Preoccupation

I love my Mac, even if I have yet to actually get the most out of it. See, I have been a PC user ever since I can remember, which is basically back when my eldest sister Girlie got her own computer for her BS Computer Science course at the Ateneo de Naga in 1993. Uh no, she didn’t get a computer until 1996 or 1997 – and I was in high school by then.

So this is my first ever Mac and I actually thought I would never get to own one as there are so many other so much cheaper laptops out there. Since this Mac is expensive, it is but natural for me to want to take care of it in all ways imaginable, like buying a track pad protector, which I did last weekend and cost me P395 for a thing such as a small piece of transparent sticker.

I had been looking all over for a keyboard protector for the past month. I was told there is a cheap one for P50 at CDR King but I have been to all the nearest branches and I have been told it is out of stock. Resigned on acquiring a very cheap protector, I decided it was time to go to Apple stores. I went to the A Store in Eastwood Mall last weekend but I was told they are also out-of-stock.

So today, I decided it was time to go to Amazon.

I spent a considerabel amount of time looking for and comparing skins, from the most expensive and the nicest-looking like the ones on the iSkin store..

Photography As A Hobby

One of my realizations the past week had something to do with one of my hobbies – photography. I think that I have not learned anything new in the last months or even years and have basically stagnated.

Yes, I used to be proud of the fact that I know shat about photography, don’t read on it and that I just somehow end up with “good” photos. These days, saying that is a disgrace.

I realize that photography, as in any hobby, must be studied. One must read what one can and when one has time.

Like any other hobby, say for example, philately (my, how geeky :P ), you just don’t keep on collecting stamps and mounting them up on albums. You read on how to properly remove stamps from envelopes and what are the best ways (what kind of album and what kind of mounting tape) to preserve them. You read on the history of stamps in general, history of stamps from a particular country (say, the Philippines) and say, the nature of commemorative and themed stamps as well as first day covers if you have any. You may also read on the value of your stamps in the market if that interests you.

A Few Hours Out: Movies and Shopping

I’ve just been feeling really tired the past days, with no energy for anything else except sleeping. I keep on telling myself its because Lia is so heavy and that I get tired from carrying her around, my back and my arms really hurt… but today I forced myself to have some time out, because I felt I should and I needed it.

We went to Eastwood to watch Iron Man 2.

I love you Scarlett Johansson. In fact, I wanna look like you, really I do! XD

Fungus on the Camera’s Sensor

I don’t think I have had the chance to write about what happened to my Nikon D80 and I suppose I will write about it but on some other time. For now I will write about what happened to me when I borrowed my sister’s Nikon D40.

I had to shoot a friend’s wedding on the afternoon of the April 16th, had to go to Calaguas Island on April 17th-18th and had to be in El Nido, Palawan on April 21st-25th – but my Nikon D80 was at the Columbia Photo Main service center in Quezon City. We were informed my D80 would not be ready in a month so we pulled out the 18-135mm lens, headed over to my sister’s house to borrow her D40 and attached the lens to it. I went to shoot my friend’s wedding, went to Calaguas and El Nido.. only to realize on the last day that I had this on my photos…

Fungus on the Sensor

… yeah, roots.
